Samsung Electronics announced on Friday that it has appointed TM Roh, head of its mobile business, as its new co-CEO and also serves as head of its device experience division. The department oversees Samsung's mobile phone, TV and home appliance businesses.
The appointment marks Samsung's return to its traditional co-CEO structure, where management responsibilities for the chip division and consumer electronics division are separated. Previously, Samsung once adopted a single CEO operating model due to the unexpected death of co-CEO Han Jong-Hee in March this year.
Since the death of Han Jong-Hee, Roh has been the interim head of the consumer electronics business since April.
This comes after Samsung appointed a new head of its Business Support Office earlier this month. The Business Support Office is the core decision-making body of the technology giant and directly serves Chairman Lee Jae-yong.
Analysts said that the office was upgraded from a previous "special working group" and is now the core strategic department within Samsung Group, equivalent to a "mini command center." Samsung Group is South Korea's largest enterprise group, with business scope covering chips, smartphones, shipbuilding and pharmaceuticals; the core function of the Business Support Office is to coordinate the operations of the group's various business units and subsidiaries.
